Our design team values a participatory and co-process approach to creating tools for communities. The Asset Mapping Toolkit research and design project is the result of multiple partnerships that focus on asset-based community development to empower communities. We are grateful for the connections we made and the support our partners provided us throughout the entirety of this project.
The Goldin Institute is a non-profit organization based in Chicago, Illinois, that works directly with communities around the globe to create their own strategies and solutions to issues such as; poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability, gender empowerment.
We worked with the Goldin Institute and its inaugural cohort of Chicago Gather Fellowship participants to understand how they use asset mapping in their community based-work.
At the beginning of the partnership, we set out to design a digital tool to integrate into Goldin Institute’s Gather platform, a mobile space for shared learning and a curriculum for people who want to build on the talents of their neighbors and the assets of their communities to make real and lasting change.

The Steans Center develops mutually beneficial relationships with community organizations to engage DePaul students in educational opportunities grounded in Vincentian values of respect for human dignity and the quest for social justice.
The Steans Center recognizes that ‘who participates in community engagement?’ is a question that needs to be addressed through the lens of privilege; that efforts to combat racism, gender and economic inequality, and all forms of injustice are central to the practice of community engagement. Through their work, the Steans Center commits to supporting community-university engagement that identifies economic, racial and gender equity gaps among those students, faculty and staff who are engaging communities.

The Egan Office works in partnership with communities to address critical social issues, promote social justice and transform the structures of inequity in our society. It seeks to understand and work with community partners using an asset-based community development approach which recognizes and builds on a community’s history and strengths. In doing so, we hope to strengthen DePaul University’s connections to Chicago and to advance DePaul’s faculty and student engagement with public agencies, community-based organizations and schools.
The Asset-Based Community Development Institute (ABCD) is at the center of a large and growing movement that considers local assets as the primary building blocks of sustainable community development. Building on the skills of local residents, the power of local associations, and the supportive functions of local institutions, asset-based community development draws upon existing community strengths to build stronger, more sustainable communities for the future.
